The Sunpower Bankruptcy and What's Next for mySunPower
SunPower Corporation, a 39-year-old pioneer in the residential solar industry with nearly 600,000 customers, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2024 in a Delaware court.

The company's financial troubles had been building for some time, with documents revealing that by the end of 2023, SunPower had accumulated nearly as much debt as it had in assets [1]. This bankruptcy filing has created significant uncertainty for hundreds of thousands of solar system owners across the United States, particularly regarding system monitoring, maintenance, and warranty coverage.
Asset Sales and Restructuring
Following the bankruptcy filing, SunPower began liquidating its assets through court-approved sales. Complete Solaria emerged as the initial "stalking horse" bidder, securing approval to purchase key portions of SunPower's business for $45 million, including Blue Raven Solar (which SunPower had acquired in 2021 for $165 million), SunPower's New Homes division, and parts of its dealer network [2].
Additional asset sales followed as the bankruptcy proceedings continued. A U.S. bankruptcy court approved the sale of certain SunPower assets to HA SunStrong Capital LLC and GF SunStrong Capital LLC for a combined total of $11.5 million ($1.5 million for specific acquired assets and $10 million for joint acquired assets) [4]. In a separate transaction, Unirac, Inc. purchased some of SunPower's intellectual property assets for $150,000 [6].
By September 20, 2024, SunPower ceased all system support through its mySunPower app, web portal, and customer service phone line (1-800-SUNPOWER), leaving customers scrambling to find alternative solutions for monitoring and maintaining their solar systems5.
SunStrong's Takeover of mySunPower
One of the most significant developments for existing SunPower customers has been SunStrong Management's takeover of the mySunPower application.
SunStrong, in partnership with Launch Servicing, now services solar lease and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contracts previously managed by SunPower [5]. SunStrong is also responsible for facilitating system maintenance, though many customers have reported uncertainties about repair timelines and procedures.
In January 2025, SunStrong implemented initial changes to the monitoring platform, with the most substantial modifications scheduled to take effect on April 15, 2025. These changes include the introduction of a premium subscription model that fundamentally alters how customers access their system data [7].
New Premium Pricing Structure
The transition to SunStrong management has resulted in a two-tiered pricing structure for what was previously included in SunPower's standard service.
Starting April 15, 2025, only basic features will remain free, including system health alerts, live system monitoring (without historical data), SunVault management, WiFi settings, and firmware updates7.
For customers who wish to access historical performance data, panel-level monitoring, production and consumption analytics, or monthly performance reports, SunStrong is implementing a premium subscription priced at $10 per month or $100 per year.
Additionally, customers currently using cellular connections for system monitoring will be required to transition to WiFi-only access by the April 15 deadline.
Currents' Free Alternative Monitoring Solution
In response to these changes, Currents has developed a free monitoring tool specifically for SunPower system owners.
This solution allows users to continue tracking historical production data without incurring the new subscription fees imposed by SunStrong. The tool works by taking daily snapshots of system performance, providing continuity of historical data that would otherwise require the premium subscription.

Currents created this free alternative specifically to help homeowners using SunPower's basic monitoring plan who need ongoing access to their historical production data Beyond monitoring capabilities, Currents also offers services to help SunPower customers monetize their clean energy production through Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), positioning itself as the only SREC platform with a dedicated SunPower integration.
