Frequently asked questions
How does Utility Savings work?
Currents scans electricity rates from multiple suppliers in your area. Without any work on your end, we switch you seamlessly to lower priced energy rates. There are no interruptions in service.
Your utility bill is made up of Supply and Distribution costs. In deregulated states (PA, OH, MD, DC, etc.), you can switch the Supplier portion of your bill to a lower rate (because of a competitive energy market), while maintaining the Distributor without any interruption to your home's energy.
Why don't you show the rates?
There are hundreds of rates, changing daily. Because we are not an energy supplier or utility, we can help you switch to any of these rates. Think of us like a smart friend that's always watching the energy market on your behalf and finding you the lowest rate, then completing the work to save you money.
Where does Utility Savings work?
We support the following states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C. and Massachusetts.
Let us know if you'd like the tool to support other states like New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Illinois, New Hampshire or Texas.
How long until I start saving?
Utility Savings kick in right after you sign up, so you should see any available savings within the first couple of billing cycles, or about a month.
How does Currents make money?
Unlike services that claim they are "100% free", we don't take commissions from energy companies. Instead, we operate under a Shared Savings model. For every dollar back that you save, we take twenty cents.
This means that we are incentivized to find you the lowest rates. The more you save, the more we make.
With our Positive Promise Guarantee, you can't lose. If you don't save money compared to your utility rates, we will refund you 100% of the difference - you don't even need to ask.
Are you an energy supplier?
No, we don't create or supply energy. We are also not a utility. Think of us like a smart friend that's always on the lookout for energy deals.
Is my energy interrupted during the switch?
No, your energy service will not be interrupted. Your utility company continues to deliver (Distribution) electricity to your home and maintain the power lines; the only change is who supplies the energy (Supplier).
When you look at your utility bill, you'll see a new line item for supplier, while your original utility company remains on the bill for distribution fees.
Will I get a bunch of calls and emails from suppliers?
No, your information is shared only with Currents. We've built technology to mask any contact information with the supplier you choose, and we prioritize your privacy. You won’t be added to random mailing lists or receive spam calls.
How do I get started?
First, create your account and add the address of the home you'd like savings for. You can add multiple properties for maximum savings. Second, connect your utility bill (we never share or sell your information). Currents will analyze your current rate and watch the market for anything lower.
When we find a better rate, we'll switch to your new rate within 30 days. Rest easy knowing that you'll know the important details of when your current plan expires, how much you've saved to date and more.
What are typical savings I can expect?
Most customers save between 10-30% annually on their energy bills, depending on the rates in their area and their energy usage.
Do I need to contact my current supplier to cancel?
No, you don’t have to worry about canceling anything. Your new supplier will handle the switch and notify your current provider, ensuring a smooth transition.
